Dead or Alive?

This is not a post about the popular 90s band.
A friend gave me a Japanese maple in really poor condition (or in fact dead)
The roots are soft and pliable, but everything above the soil is quite hard and dried. There are no signs of new growth.
I have been keeping it outdoors in full sun and watering it moderately and regularly, taking care to not over water.
Any thoughts? Dead or Alive?

Thanks. That is my assumption as well. I’ll hold off upcycling it until a get a few more opinions.

I'd keep it in bright shade for a couple months before writing it off as completely dead.

I think it is too far gone, but it would do harm to put it in the shade and water it not too much, and hope.

What zone are you in? I'm in 9b and I understand the only maples that I can grow are Bloodgood, plus or minus a few others...
