Short video for beginners. If you just bought a "bonsai" from supermarket and want it to live, you might wanna watch this!
All info based on my personal experience with many of these trees.
No offence intended with this video - to bonsaicentre owners, new "bonsai" owners, to Mr. Myiagi nor to poor old Ginsey
This video is dedicated to our dear old AUK

I should add that this practice with washing of the roots is only for the trees mentioned in the video, NEVER WASH THE ROOTS OF A CONIFER!

Thanks for sharing these tips guys. I have a Zelkova and Carmona on the way, (On closer inspection the Zelkova looks like a Chinese elm but I’ll check when it arrives)
I imagine these techniques apply to both these trees?

Zelkova definitely, I don?t have experiences with carmonas but I know they come in the same shit as the mentioned ones, so I would do it with carmona too.

Its the middle of spring now, the carmona just arrived this afternoon.
Is it safe to transplant it into a akadama/lava mix now?
No root pruning will be done this year, just a repot out of the substrate it has arrived in.

I would do it anytime, but spring is definitely the best time to do it

Thanks Mimo,
Is it safe to apply fertiliser after washing and repotting?
Or best to wait a while for the tree to settle?

Technically you didn?t cut nor damage any roots, so it shouldn?t be problem when you apply fertilizer.
But to be on a safe side, you may wait for some 2 weeks
