I’m learning a lot about bonsai from this forum and youtube videos. It seems like the go to beginner bonsai is juniper or Chinese elm. Are there any other “beginner” species I could try ?
I’ve been given a nursery azalea that I’m going to experiment with but I don’t have have any expectations for it

Lonicera, Privet, Larch, Yew, japanese maple. All rewarding species, also for people just beginning.

I know people try Thyme and Rozemary.
However, it is hard to find specimens with a decent trunk and -especially rosemary- they do not really take well to trimming roots.
It is not my thing.

The 1968 Sunset bonsai book had a picture of a cute little bonsai oregano. I have never seen a woody oregano plant, but that might work.
