I have some lovely junipers in my area (rural Southwestern Colorado) and I would be interested in making a bonsai from a cutting. I am completely new to bonsai and have done quite a bit of research and while I have found information on how to propagate the cutting I have not found what to do in the following years. What does maintenance/styling of a cutting look like in the initial years of a juniper for a beginner? Anything helps. Thank you!

The first 5-10 years is just about growing. No cutting, no styling.
However, if you want to change the trunks movements, it must be done before it hardens. Maybe whithin 2-5 years depending on your climate and care.

The main work is.. Letting it grow!
I tend to wire the main trunk as it grows to live it lots of small movements and every once in a while I cut the main trunk back and let a side-branch take over. Tere really are loads of ways to skin this cat. But core is.. Find a way to get it to grow as much as possible, and decide on a trunkline that you want.
