Examine the tree, see where the branches are and make a plan first.

I would look at it for a while from several angles, decide where the front is, pick out what looks like the main branches, and cut off the rest. Probably before I do that I would shorten the real long twigs so I don't have to use too much imagination, and the same with lower branches. When cutting things off I would cut one at a time, stop and look, and cut another. I would plan on an entire morning or afternoon, not just an hour. Some could do it faster, and some should do it slower.

Most people include an unspoken "but it's your tree" if they give any specific advice.
