Chinese Sweet plum - looking desperate was created by AiBon101

Hello I got a bonsai over Christmas. It is a Chinese sweet plum tree, 8 years old.

It arrived looking brilliant and I began looking after it following the directions of watering it approx once a week or when the soil appears dry. I pruned leaves off occasionally when they looked out of place.

for about the last 6 weeks it has been looking worse every day to the point it is at now which is barely any leaves and the leaves it does grow end up going limp and falling off.

I have also noticed the bottom of the trunk and roots appear white.

Is there anything i could do to save this please?

Very sad to see it like this.

Your tree probably is not getting water and/or is in a dry spot.

How where do you keep it?

A first remedy might be to put it in a tray with lukewarm water, so that the bottom of the pot has maybe a cm in the water. Just let it sit for an hour. That should help to get the full rootball hydrated again.

The white is scale buildup from hard water.

Putting it outside can help, assuming the weather is warm.
I am tempted to say, repot in a lerge pot with good quality soil and breaking off some old soil. But this is a tricky excersize if you do not know what you are doing. (How much is too much, right?)

Hello thank you for your reply.

So I have been keeping it on my front window. It gets bright sun in the morning then less in the afternoon. There is a radiator under the window which has been used for the last few months. Could that have not helped?

The soil still feels slightly damp in places (I last watered it about 4 days ago) but if you think it is most likely not getting enough water I will try the luke warm water method.

Is it a problem that the small hair like roots are exposed? should they be completely covered with soil?

That is what more than probably caused the problem. Trees belong outside!!!!!!!

In the right climate. Not sure if that goes for a sweet plum, which is a sub-tropical.

I'd say the problem is more the usual issue we see with mallsai (impulse buy, bad soil, low quality tree, improper care)

Thanks all.

The instructions are to keep inside. I live in the UK with temps of between 5 and -5 within the last few months. So definitely wouldn't put it outside.

I'm going to try the tip of luke warm water and get some good soil.
