How old do you think this tree is? was created by Brom

Hello again

I'd like to know if anyone can give me an indiction about the age of a nursery bought Japanese White Pine (see photos).

After looking at several videos by Peter Chan about styling young Mugo Pines, I went to the local garden centre in search of a similar pine. The only tree I thought may be suitable was the Japanese White Pine in the photo.

On one photo you can see a quite large pine cone. This got me thinking about the age of the tree.

I'd love to hear what you all think.

Thanks in advance.

This does not look like white pine, possibly mugo pine if you found it in a garden centre, impossible to say how old it is White pines are almost always grafted onto black pine. could be 5 to 10 years old possibly. With extended candles like that it is too early in the year for white pines to extend that much. You need to know what it is and what you are doing before touching it

Thanks for replying. The label on the tree said 'Pinus parviflora Negishi'. I'll have a look for a graft in the morning. At first glance there doesn't seem to be one.
Aside from the age question, what do you think about the tree as a potential bonsai?

If you are in England as I assume you are then that amount of growth at this time of year does not happen on white pine. If you count the needles in each cluster or group and there are two it is Mugo pine White pines have five needles in the cluster.

I've just counted the number of needles in a cluster and there are 5. I double checked all over the tree and it's definitely 5.

You're close. I am British but live in Cologne, Germany.

I have never seen a such deep green Negishi. Up here they are much more light green, almost White. Maybe a climate thing, or Else it is no Negishi.

Nice material to work on thou.

Thanks. If it isn't a Negishi, what could it be?

I have just measured the tree and looked for a graft. The tree is about 50 cm tall and the truck 2.5 cm. I also measured the cone; it's about 7 cm high. I cannot see a graft but I really don't have the knowledge or experience regarding this.

While I wait for new wire to arrive, I'm trying to watch as many videos as I can for styling inspiration.
