Should I save azalea? was created by Ericwrenn

I’m just starting to try bonsai, and I dug up this relatively old (15 years?) but unhealthy azalea? It does have an interesting trunk and I was hoping to see whether you all think it’s worth trying to save and what approach you would take with it. Thanks so much!

It needs to be re potted properly, then it might stand a chance, it is too high in that pot, and the soil looks poor.

Thanks—yes, I just dug it up and put it in that pot temporarily. Do you know if I should trim it back more for now or wait?

No reason to cut newly collected materials. Just take care of it a season or two and make sure it is healthy.
