New to bonsai, in the military and move often was created by mtpatterson

Good day,

My name is Mike and I am new to bonsai and the art form of maintaining and growing these beautiful trees. I have done some reading and understand these trees take a long time to see any progress and take a lot of work. My plan is to have one indoor tree and one outdoor tree, the out door tree would be on my balcony and the indoor tree would be on a table right near the same balcony as the outdoor tree. The balcony faces east and usually gets sun from sunrise to about 345-4 o'clock in the afternoon. My outdoor tree I want to start from seeds or a cutting but am having a difficult time trying to find what tree I should choose because I am in the military and travel every 4-5 years, I am also having trouble identifying where I should get the cutting or seeds from and was wondering if anyone had any good sources. The indoor tree I am thinking about buying the starter kit off this site and going from there. Any insight or thoughts you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Mike,

welcome.

Safe yourself a lot of headachers and don't try to grow trees inside.

More often than not, bonsai are started from a much larger plant. And of course, you can grow from seed or cutting, but it is probably best for your interest in the hobby to not only grow something from seed/cutting, but to also get a more established plant.

Take a look:

For outdoor trees the best source for cuttings and seeds is your closest forest or a garden near you. Native trees or trees Hardy in your Environment is the best start.

Also do consider starting from more mature garden center stock. That Will save you 10 years or so in the progression.

Native trees would work... if you didn't move.

If you do move often, it depends on where you move to. If it's a region with the same climate, no problem. If you move to a much warmer/colder/ drier/colder climate, it can be an issue.
