New Black Pine - I Need Advice and Help was created by TinosTreeYo

Hi! New to this forum and bonsai.
I just received my first black pine in the mail today; and its the first time I've ordered a living thing on the internet so I don't know what I expected, but I was hoping to get some of your expert opinions of the state of this tree? Looking at it there seems to be some sketchy cuts and the branches seem thin? I really wanted to train a pine into a semi-cascade or slanting kind of style, so any advice towards that is golden.

First, a disclaimer: I am not an "Expert"

Next, I think the tree looks like it is in really good health. The branches seem to be in proportion with the trunk and that it has already had some pruning done to the candles which is good. Not a lot of styling has been done at all, but I think to turn it into a cascade style you are going to have to cut off about 70% of the tree as the trunk is quite thick already. I think you could maybe also split the trunk, but I am far too inexperienced to know for sure or to tell you how to do it.

I think you have a good starter bonsai there. A lot of potential and a strong specimen. Be happy, and have some fun!

This is a young tree that has been grown for garden use. The candles have not been pruned correctly, they should have been removed completely. I would suggest allowing the tree to grow this year, adding fertiliser, throughout the year. Then next year I would look at pruning candles and doing some styling, that way you can get an idea how the tree is growing and decide what you are going to do to it.

Definitely agree with the above letting it grow, however, I would go light on the fertilizer this year and next year at the appropriate time prune the branches splitting in the second photo back to 1 or to one of the younger branches or the branch going off to the left. Looking at those two equally sized branches and the knob they are producing is going to get much worse very quickly, hence why I would suggest going light on the fertilizer this year.

First aim is to make sure this is healthy. At the moment it looks like you have a serious case of pine needle cast and someone has done some brute pruning. Fix those issues and late summer consider your next steps

According to your previous post, you're new to bonsai. You should wonder if you should be giving advice, especially when it concerns pines, that have some specifric requirements.

I think the tree looks like it is in really good health.

The rings on the needles indicate it is NOT in really good health.

The branches seem to be in proportion with the trunk

Not really.

it has already had some pruning done to the candles which is good.

It's NOT good, as it wasn't done correctly.

I think to turn it into a cascade style you are going to have to cut off about 70% of the tree

Why?

as the trunk is quite thick already.

It's not.

I think you could maybe also split the trunk

Look, your point is taken, but I think that your comments below are taken completely out of context in the quotes and that the tone of the response is unreasonable. As you said in terms of QED, yes, perhaps so. However, if one reads the text that I wrote it was full of self-qualifying statements that indicated that I was not giving advice but merely my humble opinion.

Based on what I have read and seen, the tree looks like it has a lot of potential, to me. Would I leave it as it is now, absolutely not, I think it needs a lot of work, but the bones of the tree appear to me to be good and one could get a very good bonsai out of it.

I added a comment, stating that I am not an expert. I expressed my views in a piece of writing that in no way purported that what I was saying was the bible, nor that it should be followed. I merely added my thoughts to an inactive post and since having done so, some valuable insights have been shared for the original poster, so job done really.

I am here to learn, and I believe so was the original poster. If this is not a place of learning, then I should just leave. There is no reason to be rude or derogatory towards somebody online, just politely state that I am wrong and that you disagree with everything I said. If I come back and defend everything I said point for point then, by all means, take me apart. However, I am conceding in my first response that I have learnt from other peoples posts in this thread and it is very interesting.

Don't jump to being rude! A polite "Nope, I'm afraid you are completely wrong" would be better and would've got your point across. Everybody starts somewhere, including you. Remember what it was like for you at the beginning. I did not come to this forum to be bullied in the first post. Be respectful, understand that people have different opinions, and furthermore, actually read the messages as then you would have seen that everything I said was qualified with the statement that I am not an expert.

Disrespect gets you nowhere in life.

To your points,do you have any suggestions on dealing with the rings around the needles or how to fix the incorrect pruning over the coming year? Very curious as you seem to have brought up very specific details.

Point is that, if you give incorrect advice, people may take it and ruin or kill a tree.
