I bought this at a local nursery I cannot seem to figure out what it is I thought maybe olive but not sure it was advertised as a starter bonsai

It looks like a near dead Olive.

under bright lights all the leaves are well not a good pic from phone

If it is an Olive and that is what it might be then it will be a dead Olive if you keep it inside. Did you ask what species it is when you bought it? If they did not know what it is then you should not buy from them and go to a place that does. Take a different picture use flash to get better light so we can see what it is.

Now I am not sure, could be an Azalea. Difficult to tell but the place you bought it from should have told you what it is. Unless you live in a very cold place then it definitely should be outside.
