Hello,

I have been growing a weeping cherry tree from a seed, and it is just over 1 year old now.
Full disclosure, I am very new and inexperienced. But I know it takes about 3 years before I will be able to really start training it as a bonsai, and hopefully will have time to learn. I’m mainly just having fun with the process and watching it grow.

As I wait ~3 years, I am wondering what I should do at this time and haven’t been able to find specific guides on care at this stage. It has some green buds starting again. Can someone advise me if I should prune it back more heavily at this time, and where?
Or should I just wait another year to let it grow more robustly?

May I ask in which part of the world you live?
And what kind of soil did you sow this seed in?

I would do nothing at all but normal care. Watering, fertilizing and wait.

However, if you want to introduce movement to the trunk, that has a last date when it is possible. I am not sure the how long that Window is for this species.

Stick to normal care and everything will be alright, that's what I would do at least.

Thanks! I’m in Washington state. I used a generic potting soil. I tried to germinate 5 seeds though, and only one was successful

Wire some movement in that trunk, straight trunks are so uninteresting most of the time
