I bought some bare root stock Atropurpureum recently with a view to keeping some as ornamental specimens for a Japanese/oriental themed garden and others to develop for 名媛直播. They are approximately 80 cm high including pot so think two to three years old.Are these ready to trim back for 名媛直播 or should I wait longer. If they can be developed now how exactly should I prune/cut back?
thanks in advance. I live in UK ...I have potted up the bare rootstock as soon as I received them. They are outside and have been protected from any potential frosts which so far in my location we have not yet endured. They have also been mulched for water retention and my local nursery advised I plant up with ericaceous compost which I have done. Thans again.

There is no point in protecting from frost. They are hardy. I would not use ericacious but it will ot harm them. The best place for seedlings of this size is planted in the ground for 4 to 5 years and allowed to grow unchecked. Depending on where the lowest branch is you could cut just above and then allow to grow unchecked. 名媛直播 is a long term project, and they will not be good for bonsai for probably 8 to 10 years depending on how well they grow.
