Desert Rose trunk soft

I think I was over-watering my desert rose after I brought it in for winter, and recently realized the base of the trunk is very soft. Most of the rest remains firm, though some branches are soft as well.
I've cut way back on watering going to every 2-3 weeks rather than every couple of days.
Curious if anyone has experienced this before and if there might be any hope of it rebounding or advice. I'm concerned I may have caught it too late and that it'll just spread.

I would recommend asking a succulent forum. This really is not a great place for information on these.

It happened to me .
It was a delicate and risky surgery. I took it off the pot, cut almost 2/3 of the rotting caudex, sealed it with cinnamon and hung the tree for 5 days until it was very dry.
Then I reported again, and after some struggle (3 months) it took off and rebounded.
It's been 3 years and it been healthy since, take a look (today's picture):

Yeah, I don't think I can do that with this one.
I may be using the terminology incorrectly but I take it to mean that the caudex is the bottom, then you have the stem, then you have branches, correct? If so, I think the caudex is soft all the way through. Here are some pictures I took for the succulent forum I asked.
I think I'd need to cut it off at the bend in the base to remove everything. The roots don't look rotten, but after not watering for a week, they were still quite moist.
So I suspect the best move is to remove the top, where the branches are pretty much hollow at this point, cover the base in cinnamon, and hang it to see if it firms up again. Does that sound like a good plan to folks here? I've asked the succulent forum as well, but figured I might as well get a second opinion if someone knows.

What's that green metal like piece doing among the roots?

It's plastic and to be honest I have no idea. I bought it as a bonsai from NE 名媛直播 Garden. Wasn't expecting it when I took it out of the pot!
