When should I expect spring growth to emerge on a large established Juniperus squamata?
I'm in the PNWof the US (8b Csb) and while it seems early, i do see a lot of light green growth that is perked up and out from the overall shape. could this actually be last years growth just plumping up getting ready to come out of dormantcy? or is it time for growth already? We are getting all our bulbs popping up all over town and buds on trees are getting fuller

Junipers actually grow whenever not frozen. So if you are getting higher temps you can expect some responses. A real spring push here is normally late march I think?? So in your case, does not seem too odd? Is January the end of your normal frosty time?

yeah, we have had a very mild winter with almost no frost to speak of. (was supposed to get a big storm last week, but instead, it's 51f today!)
We usually count mid-Feb as the end of any risk of hard frost, though anything really "hard" is rare here. we are more of a one day slush and annual dose of freezing rain sort of city.
So This seems like a good sign, I believe this amazing juniper is doing a good job overcoming its harsh transplant last fall, I'm ever so cautiously hopeful that with proper care and patience, it will continue to thrive.

Fingers crossed!
Key thing.. Leave it alone. No peeking. No scrtching the soil to see roots, no moving around to get the ideal position at various time of the day etcetc.
And.. A swimming juniper => Dead juniper. So do not overwater when foliage gets droopy...

thanks for the healthy reminder, I have actually gotten a few less valuable and sturdy plants to play with so that I keep my hands off the big guy! it is very well potted, placed in a good sunny location on a protected cove of my deck to keep it from the harshes of any last winter weather, and its potting mix is lightly coved with a drape that allowed good airflow and a minimum amount of rainwater to get in. the needles get lots of air, light, and rain and I monitor the water needs of the potting mix and supplement or recover as needed

happily, the juniper has made it through the winter, is budding out all over happily (including back buds!) and spring has sprung with most all of my trees!
