I received a tree seed (Jacaranda Mimosifolia) last year for Christmas and have been growing my bonsai since.
It is getting pretty tall but the internet said not to trim it until the trunk of the tree gets bigger. The tree is only about a year old and so it is still very thin.
I don't want to kill it because now I love this plant like it's my child.
Also the Bottom leaves are lighter than the top leaves.

Please help!

Don't prune it yet.

I like bonsai and I have kids, but I really find this a silly statement (just like calling trees babies).
Plants are not human. Don't treat them as such.

Jacarandá is a native of Brazil.
It's very difficult to get a bonsai out of it.
Sprouts easily, grows fast, that's the reason it's sold as "bonsai seeds".I've got six or seven in pots that will go to the ground next season and perhaps one or two can become a bonsai in 5 to 10 years.
Let's see.
