Hello, new to the game. I have had a Chinese elm for a couple months two months ago it started losing leaves. Which after reading could have been due to weather. But I read should get new bids shortly after. Nothing has happened tree looks dead at this point any advice or confirmation of death would be greatly appreciated. I attached pictures of the tree and the roots.

If you have as it looks had it inside then there is the problem.poor light and too warm. Get it in a pot if you have not already and put it in as cool place as you can with as much light as possible until there is not danger of frost and then put it outside and leave it there. Chinese Elms will withstand -10C They are hardy. Even though it has lost leaves do not allow it to get very dry, but only water when almost dry. Then hope it lives.

welcome to the empire.
Lesson 1. Ask first. Then take action.
Never remove a plant from its pot and wash the roots unless it is healthy.
Sick plants need all their enerygy to recover. My lifting it and cleaning out the roots you may have made the problem worse.
I do not see enough polish i the trunk to believe in a recovery.
