Hi! I am brand new to bonsais. I have had my eye on a pomegranate one for a while now, and I think I am going to buy it. My problem is that I tend to accidentally kill plants and I don’t know how. I really want to keep this tree alive but I have so many questions. I have read many articles, but I’m still confused about what exactly I ~need~ to have in the very beginning. I have an extra pot that I bought a while ago, but I was wondering if I needed to have a proper pot right away or if I could leave my tree in what it was shipped in. I was also wondering if I absolutely needed to have pruning shears and such right away or if I could wait and buy them later on. I would greatly appreciate any help that is given!

Hello Abigail
The care for the species can be found here:
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/dwarf-pomegranate
It is impossible to answer the other questions without seeing the tree.
You will need to repot in spring IF the tree needs repotting.
You will need tools to cut the tree IF the tree needs prunning. However, you will not need specific bonsai tools at this stage, ordinary secateurs will do fine in the beginning.

Hi Abigail,
You do ot need any of this right away. Just make sure you know what care is needed from a sunlight / position / water perspective. Then when you get the plant you just do that. Take care of the plant. Especially if you tend to kill plants, it will be hard enough.
As for trimming.. It has been mentioned already: You can initially certainly work with regular scissors. If you decide to get more serious about this hobby, get better scissors.
Most people repot plants way too often and put them in small pots too early. I have many plants that I have had for 5+ years that are still in plastic containers because they are not ready for mall pots yet.
Good luck!
