Hi there, I'm a new co-owner of a Zelkova bonsai. I purchased it yesterday as a gift to my partner who has been begging for one for over a year. I purchased this online, which of course was shown full of leaves and in full bloom. If you see the attached picture, it is almost bare with few leaves.
I wanted to know, is the tree ok? Is this normal in Winter? The soil seems to be plump and has give, I don't see signs of damage on the roots or trunk. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on what country you are in and where the plant was kept by the seller.
The plant should be outside all year. It is hardy and if it is kept in too warm environment it will not last long in winter. I would think that it has ben on a colder place and that has meant it has become dormant, and it is fine. I would put it outside unless you have very cold say -10C or lower in a sheltered spot. and wait for it to start growing again. You could put it in a greenhouse or cold conservatory.

Hi, Raul, welcome.
Your tree is not a Zelkova it's a Chinese Elm, Ulmus Parvifolia.
It's indeed in bad shape and probably in dormancy right now. Very difficult to be kept indoors even in the winter.
