Help with my Ficus was created by A_Ficus

Hello all,

I recently got a Ficus 名媛直播 for Christmas after wanting a 名媛直播 for god knows how long however, I've only recently realised how much work goes into keeping them happy and healthy and I want to make sure my Ficus 名媛直播 thrives for as long as possible so I have a few questions if anyone can help me.

I have my 名媛直播 in a nice, mostly sunny spot indoors and I have just given it a good, thorough watering as my partner had it for about a week and a half before giving it to me and didn't water it.
My biggest concern currently is fertilizer. I've read online that keeping a balanced fertilizer is good for the entire growing season, does this correspond to what other Ficus owners have experienced? Also, what is a good Fertilizer brand? I've read Osmocote is good but I'm not sure which one would work best for my 名媛直播.
Is there a preference as to whether the fertilizer should be pellets or liquid?

I live in Australia so some fertilizer brands might not be available for me to buy in shops. I'd be happy to buy good stuff online but I think I will need something I can get in shops just to get me by for the time being.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if anyone has any general tips on Ficus 名媛直播 please feel free to post them. I'm super excited about what will hopefully be the first of many 名媛直播.

Hi and welcome to the Empire.

As you are in Australia, and it is summer there, by far the best place for your plant is outside. Inside they sulk most of the time.

Please post a picture. We love to see what you are working on.

As this is your first and only tree.. Do not break your head over fertilizer. Just any old balanced fertilizer such as what you get for regular houseplants, will do.

Have fun!

I have put it outside for the morning sun as we are going through a heat wave of 40+ degrees Celsius so it will just burn if I leave it out there for the whole day.

This is my Ficus, I think it has good growth at the moment but just lacks a bit of shape. I found what I think was a nest of spiders in the leaves and stupidly sprayed it with bug killer not knowing that it could damage the 名媛直播. I washed the leaves with water not long after spraying however so hopefully that will stop anything happening to the 名媛直播.

Thanks for your help with fertilizer, I am going to my local garden shop today to some a good all round liquid fertilizer and see how that goes.

OK. Just know that plants do not like to be moved around. In my opinion it would be better to put it somewhere where it gets morning or afternoon sun. Shade for the rest of the day till it gets used to being outside. Plenty of water.

There is no reason why insecticide would hurt your mallsai.

Spiders are not insects.

My ficus, which is of the grocery store genus, is 21 years old now. It is indoors from about November to March and outdoors the rest of the year, where the temps are 40C from about July to September, and sometimes June, too. It loves sunshine. I would put it outside, water every morning real well, and water again in the afternoon if it looks like it is wilting. Maybe a little partial shade at first, and bring it back in when the temps reach about 15C, if they do there.

Fertilize it real well, too. I fertilize about half strength of whatever I have once a week. That is a lot, and I have to deal with a lot of growth, which may be the reason the trunk has gone from less than a centimeter to over 10 centimeters. We should all have such problems.

Thanks for the advice, I want it to flourish so I'll keep it outside for the growing season.

Do you find liquid fertilizer works the best? I bought some fertilizer pellets the other day but they are the slow release ones and I'm not sure whether they give it enough nutrients.

Since you have lots of growth do you prune the leaves regularly or do you simply do one big prune when it gets out of control? I want to trim some of the leaves off my Ficus so I can start giving it a bit of shape.

One big training prune when you can see the inner bonsai, then pinching and light nipping back to keep everything in shape.

Liquid or solid fertilizer, both work well, if used as directed.

Great, thank you for all the help. I have moved it outside to a nice sunny spot and picked up some liquid fertilizer which I will start using today.

Again thank you for all the help, I will definitely update with pictures when I start getting a bit more shape in my 名媛直播.
