Hello there.
Unfortunately, I dont know much about bonsai trees rather than they're beautiful and net.
This one should be a ficus tree - dont know the exact species
My girlfriend had it for more than a year now and took care of it like a house plant- making sure it has light, not over watered not underwatered, fertilizer from time to time - just basic care
We noticed the whiteness on the aerial roots quite a while ago, upon some research we found it was the water and started using filtered water sincer. But just now I noticed that two of the aerial roots seem rotten - hollow
It was never repoted, fertilizer used was for house plants. The leaves seem healthy, theres a new tiny one growing every week or so.
My thinking was:
-repot in spring/summer using a proper wide pot
- start using proper fertilizer
- cut the rotten roots and pray?
Grateful for any advice

I just realized by searching on here that this type that I have isn't a bonsai, but I'm wondering if you could still help with those questions? Mine isn't doing that badly, but it's losing leaves out the wazoo and its roots are growing up past the soil of its meager IKEA pot. I know its no beloved bonsai, but I love this plant.
Should it be safe then to repot it, and give it generic soil and fertilizer?

Hello,
you will probably get better help in a regular houseplant forum.

I had tried, particularly with one that was recommended in the forum here to others having trouble with theirs, however each one replies with bonsai treatment, so the houseplant enthusiasts have been of no aid
