i have a Chinese elm tree 8 years old and leaves have fallen off so I am wondering if I can cut off all the leaves and let them grow back so the tree is more full because i have branches which only have like one leaf on

Hi and welcome!

The real question I think you should try to get answered is.. Why did your plant drop allmost all the leaves.

- In fall it is normal to drop leaves if kept outside and exposed to cold temperatures. If this is the reason, trimming back now will not get you immediate leaves again: In spring the tree will sprout leaves again. So trimming makes sene before spring, to cut back leggy growth and keep a denser crown.
- If you have the tree inside, other factors play a role that make trees drop leaves. Pretty much all mean something is wrong. Trees that have a health issue have a hard time getting back. The leaves are their energy supply. Cutting them off when the plant is already struggling would go agains the help needed and as such, is not a good idea.

Do you have some idea why the leaves dropped?

I have the elm tree inside and I am a beginner. I think the leaves fell off because I had it above my radiator and it got too hot for it I have moved it away and it is doing better but I just have a few stems which have no leaves therefore I am unsure if I should cut them off or leave them be

If you get the plant back to health, it will start growing again. At that point once you have good growth at the end, the plant should from itself start growing nearer the trunk assuming sufficient light. Just realize that winter inside is difficult for the tree. I would not recommend trimming unless very healthy.
