So, I'm getting my third chinese elm. My first I was in my 20's in Maryland and that tree died in the sun outside. My second one did well in North Carolina until I took it outside for the winter and sat it in a small hole and it was in its pot still. I covered it with pine straw and my dogs yanked it up and destroyed it. This time I'm 57 yr old and now that I just ordered it, I'm wondering if I can leave it in my garage for the winter sitting on a table saw by the garage door windows? I'm a little concerned for its care since I'm getting it now. Should I keep it inside now with light or would it be best outside but in the cold garage? Help. I need it.

Not sure when winter will hit. But if you cannot give it a month+ transition into outside living before winter hits, you are better off keeping it indoors over winter, assuming you can find a room that is not air conditioned etc..

Leatherback is right.
It depends on where the tree was kept before you bought it. If it has been kept indoors, then keep it indoors in winter. If it has been kept outdoors in the same climate as yours, before you bought then you can keep it in your cold garage.
