EMERGENCY: Whats wrong with my chinese elm? was created by jdselby24
Posted 5 years 2 months ago #53994Something is wrong with my chinese elm and I don't know what, over the past few weeks it has lost the majority of its leaves. Initially i thought it was getting rid of older growth as the leaves it began to loose where older growth, and where replaced pretty quickly by new shoots. However now the remaining leaves have become very weak and fall of even if brushed or tapped lightly. The new growth often turns black and dies off and some leaves further down the tree have began to turn brown and die off! Please see pictures:

I don't know whats wrong with it! It grew vigorously all summer and I had to prune it regularly. I dont know its history before May this year as it was a birthday present and is my first proper bonsai. I only water it by soaking it when the soil is almost dry (perhaps this is wrong) and over summer I put it outside but have brought it in for autum/winter. Its in my bedroom on a south facing window sil.l

Water it when it needs water (when the soil feels dry).

It should be outside till the first frost and then moved to a cold frame or an unheated garage, not your bedroom.
Apart from the fact that it is being watered in the wrong way and it is inside too early, I think I can see some spider mites webs all over the new shoots.

Posted 5 years 2 months ago #53997I don't water it on a regular basis, I water it when the soil feels dry like you say. First frost has already happened where I am and I don't have a garage with windows or a coldframe. I do however have a polytunnel. On closer inspection I can see that it does indeed have spider mites living on it, shall I purchase an insecticide or is there another way to get rid of them?

You're not watering the correct way though.
First frost has already happened
My elms are outdoors, always. Elms can tolerate frost.

Spider mites are not insects.
Here's a list of things you can do:

Sorry, what I mean is the technique you've been using is wrong.
Don't dunk your trees in a regular basis, only in emergency cases or after repotting them.
Water them from above with a fine spray, let the water drain through the drainage holes, and then water again after ten minutes or so.
