browning foliage and winter protection ? was created by Hempress名媛直播

Hello everyone, I’ve been following advice I was previously given in this forum on my last post. 名媛直播 is outside 24/7 and gets more than 5 hours of direct sunlight. It is starting to get colder out.

I’ve looked through the forum to try and answer my question but the posters with the same problem as me don’t have the same conditions for their trees. Some foliage is turning brown I’m assuming because it is starting to get colder out but I'm Trying my hardest not to kill this tree so I want to be sure. There is lots of new foliage forming and roots so I don’t think it’s dying.

My other question is how do I go about protecting my tree in the winter when it gets colder than -10? I’m concerned it will get buried in snow because it is so small.

I was thinking of making a makeshift greenhouse to put on the deck where it currently is but I really don’t know if that would work or not. A friend suggested putting it inside at night and bringing it out during the day but the varying temperatures so quickly will most likely kill it. Does anyone have any suggestions or things they’ve tried that will work to protect it this winter?

Dont be afraid of snow covering the tree. The snow protects the tree from Wind and cold and are natural. A cold winter without snow is much more difficult to master.

Even if it’s over a foot of snow and the tree disappears beneath it? And what about in colder than -10 degrees ?I read that colder than that anything colder is not necessarily healthy for the juniper .

If its completely covered in snow it can cope with lower temps, cause the snow is "insulating" it from getting colder. Sounds strange but thats the way it is.
In nature trees and shrubs are burried onder snow every winter and because of that probably survive the winter.
What you have to be caefull about is prolonged frost ( without snow): the rootball and roots can completely freeze and subsequently die.So, if it freezes a bit now and then, with positive temps during the day: no problems, just leave it where it is. But with longer periods with heavy frost ( say -10) , and no positive temps during the day you better protect your tree. Two ways: place it in a non heated garden shed, or protect it from getting frozen by wrapping the pot in some bubble foil.
NEVER EVER place your tree inside ( in a heated house that is), and then outside again!!!

It is rarelly colder than -10 under a big pile of snow. Up north from me People shovel snow on their trees to project Them. If you have snow in winter, you can feel Lucky.

You could put it under the table it is on. If it gets covered in snow brush it off the foliage leave it on the pot. The main thing is that it does not get too dry. As for the brown bits, I think it is normal, growths do die sometimes. Anyway winter is a long way off yet. None of my Junipers or most other trees get any protection, even from rain.
