Hi everyone, new here. I picked up some San Jose Juniper nursery stock a few months ago and now I've noticed that some needles are turning yellow. They're still soft and flexible, not dried out.
I had attempted my first jin but didn't seal it or treat it, and now a powdery black fungus or mold has appeared. I suspect the two are related and I'm hoping to treat it and save my tree. I'm in the bay area of California and the tree is still in its nursery pot. Any help is much appreciated.

The needles are old needles dying off, which is normal this time of year.
The black spots in your deadwood are normal too. I get it all the time when I make new yin. I am guessing it is some fungus living of the moisture in the wood. Over time it will disappear. Naturally, you can decide to put limesulphur on it if you are concerned. I see no reasons for concern

Do you think that this plant, having almost only needle-type foliage, while it seems a scale-type juniper, is a reason for concern?

It is virtually impossible to get rid of needle foliage on san jose. I only have 2 branchlets scale on mine. So no, i see no reason for concern. This is a characteristic of the species.
