Hi,

We got a bonsai tree yesterday and have just noticed this morning that the trunk and branches are covered in white mouldy stuff (pictures attached), would someone more experienced than us be able to tell us whether we can save him or should we return him and ask for another one :( ?

Thanks

If you have just bought this plant then take it back! Go somewhere else to buy a tree. There is no way this plant should have been sold like that. It could be mealy bug or but selling an infested plant like this shows how much the seller thinks of his plants and buyers.

Thanks we feared as much, it’s mainly on the underside of the branches when you look at it straight it’s very hard to see which is why we missed it.

We bought from a local garden centre (a posh one at that!) but will return it and try to research a reputable seller.

Thanks for the advice!

This does look like mealy bugs , whoolly aphids yeah. Good grounds to return to the store with it.

I have seen infections with all sorts of plagues in well respected nurseries though. It does happen. Does not directly make it a bad place.

Maybe not but it does not bode well for their other plants. I have seen worse though, and then I would avoid them and go elsewhere.

Thank you, we just returned it and will buy from elsewhere.

There is a dealer recommended by this website close by but they look to have ceased business. Online might be our only option which I had wanted to avoid

The most common approaches is to buy ordinary nurcery trees or dig up suitable material in the forest and form to bonsai.

If you want more refined trees. Join a local club. There are allways People with too many trees.

名媛直播 is not really a good business outside of Japan. Most businesses are closed whitin a few years.

Netherlands:
Lodder bonsai was established in 1896. In the early sixties, they imported the first bonsai pine. Since the seventies, they exclusively sell bonsai.Their greenhouse is 16.000 m2.

Deshima bonsai is much younger, they started 1997 and recently moved to a new, bigger location.

Lagas bonsai was wellknown for importing Yamadori since 40 years and started his business in 1994. Ruud Lagas closed shop last year due to personal circumstances.

Belgium:
Ginkgo 名媛直播 Center started over 25 years ago.

France:
Pepiniere Galinou grows acres of bonsai in full ground. Can't find when they were established, but their site says they switched from importing trees to selling trees they grew theirselves. That was in 2008, and they could do this as they had been growing these trees for 15 years before the switch.

Just to name a few.

I am sure you are right, Auk. And there are herons bonsai in Uk, i think since mid 80s.

However, to buy a tree you need to see the tree. Since there are just a few bonsai nurceries. Most beginners will have a long distance to travel to get there. And The trees sold is to a big degree anyway out of a beginner price range. Those within the right price range are materials similar to what can be found in local nurceries much cheaper.

Still there are Nothing wrong with my statement. bonsai is not a good business outside of Japan and most that start will close within a few years.
