Hello Everyone , I am new to this forum as well as a new bonsai enthusiast ;)
I got 1 Juniper 4 yrs, 1 Elm 8 yrs and 1 Japanese maple 4yrs .
I believe and please tell me if I am wrong all these 3 spices are ok for outdoor now living in NYC My first question will be what is the lower temperature they can substain ? They spend the all Summer outside my fire escape with a good light without being expose to the burning sun.
I am now preparing myself to keep them alive during the rough winter of NY.
This is where I am a bit lost . By reading some post they advise to not bring my bonsai indoor which will perturb their dormancy or it my be to hot etc..
I do not have any other access than indoor my apt or outside my nice little balcony fire escape . I was thing of placing a wooden greenhouse so they can be protected but I am not sure its safe considering the cold and wind we have specially in January/February.
What is the proper way to keeping them alive . Thank you so much for your advises

The trees needs be protected from the cold wind. Place the trees in styrofoam boxes, cover the pots with soil. The trees dosen't need sun in dormancy period. Or you can build or buy a small greenhouse and cover the pots with styrofoam.

How cold does it get in nyc?

I have each of these species and they remain outside yearround. Peaks in the -20c, but hardly ever long frost, mostly a few days in a row. My trees are out of the wind and out of direct sun in winter. Note that enclosures heat up fast when in the sun, als in winter so I would avoid that. Especially juniper needs light in winter whenever temps are a few degrees above freezing.

Hello Leatherback,
Thank you for your response. I will say in NY it could go to -20c like where you leave.
The wind is the killer overall , specially in months of January - February.
My bonsai are place on my small balcony . I should still protect them a bit I guess...? For exemple I carry large roses pots over the summer and they never survive through the winter They always died and never pick up in spring time. I just buy some new ones every spring and I really don't want to have to do the same with my bonsai .
It a new Hobby for me and I want to see if I am capable of keeping them for as long as possible so I can be proud of this little acomplishment ;) .
I have to admit and this is probably my lack of knowledge in this area, than I am a bit skeptical of seing my bonsai survive over the winter with-any kind of protection against , snow, wind, frost etc...
How do you do in your country , you must have a little secret I guess .
Also one more thing how often do you water them , is there a specific temperature where I should not water them and do you feed your bonsai in dormancy .
Thank you for your time and your advise and sorry for my broken English.

Hello Hansen,
Thanks for your reply.
when you say they don't need any light , will it be ok in my basemen t which the room temperature is good "cold" for dormancy but it is pitch black . No light .
Also what about water and food.
Do bonsai need them in winter time and how often ?
Thanks for your time

The juniper will need light because it's a evergreen. But it still needs to be protected from the cold wind. You can build or buy a small grenhouse for the juniper or buy one of those:

I would place the maple and the elm in the greenhouse or in small styrofoam boxes or protect them with the "pop up bags". Has the elm been kept outside or inside last winter?

The trees still needs water in winter, if you protect them as i adviced. But they don't need to be feeded.

Hi,

No secret at all...

Effectively you want the tree to stay as cold as possible, for as long as possible. And this includes the twigs. Meanwhile protect from.wind and sun. It typically is not the absolute temperatures alone that kill the tree.

With your situation I am not sure what the best course of action is :/

Putting your trees in the basement runs the risk that it it not cold enough. You should aim for maximum a few degrees above freezing. So maybe 4, 5 celcius. I doubt your basement gets that cold.

No fertilizer during winter. I do not water my trees because our winters are very humid with precipitation every day more or less. Do note.. if plants are frozen solid for weeks at a time they can also dry out. Have not had to deal with that myself.

Thanks Hansen for your tips.
I have no idea if my Elm tree was previously kept outside during the winter of not ?
I just got it this past summer .
I would like all my three trees : Juniper,Elm and Japanese Maple to get use to be outdoor all year around since in my apartment it is often too dry and hot and I can not control the heat which is automatically provide by the building .
Asa far as water , you mind telling me how often should I water in winter , do I need humidity tray or not ?
Thanks

Protect the trees as I told and they should be fine.

Juniper - greenhouse or pop up bag
Elm and maple - greenhouse, pop up bag or styrefoam boxes, cover the pots with soil.

You simply just water when/if the soil is becoming dry. You do not need humidity trays as there are a lot of humidity in winter.
