This is a beautiful plant that blooms every year, but some year more than others.
I would not classify it as bonsai, as I do not train it, nor do I know how top train - I just enjoy it as it is.
I have had it for at least, IDK, 7 years.
Does anyone recognize this?
More importantly – the gist of this email . . .
This year and this year only, there is this crazy bloom, or seed pod, or something.
In all of the years I have had this guy, never seen this.
These 2 photos are about 2 weeks apart. It is growing longer and losing some of that rich burgundy coloration.

I dont have any idea what this is, but I dont think it is a common bonsai material.
If you have any local cacti and succulent club it is worth checking with them. This is clearly from any genus within their expertice.

As Auk indicated, Adenium with seed pods.
In contrast to what Tropfrog sais.. It is commonly used in bonsai in Thailand. Not my favorite, but in tropical places they can make somewhat realistic bonsai.
