Hi everyone,
Spring is just about to start here in australia and i was thinking of repotting my bonsai.
It is a triden mapel. If i repot it into a bigger pot will it grow a bit bigger? Id like it bigger if i can.

Hi Ryan, if you want it a lot bigger, plant it in the ground for 2-3 years if it is frost hardy enough for your area.

You would be better planting it in the ground for a few years, then cutting back this will give you a much thicker trunk than you have right now. From the leaves it is too late to re pot this year but you could put in the ground without disturbing the roots. You could drop it into a larger pot and lots of fertiliser and let it grow, then cut back.

Your picture is not showing.
Tridents being tridents and australia overall having a warm and dry climate I would say, that pot is not too big. Overpotting is risky because the substrate may stay wet too long. So be carefull when watering untill the tree picks up pace.
Do note: Standard nursery practice it to only increase pots by one size at a time, and uppotting whenever the whole pot is colonized with roots, which may be several times a year. Considering they grow plants to make money, and labour costs money, I am convinced this is the fasted way to get them to grow out, besides of course full ground growing.
Alternative: Have a pot with loads of oles in the bottom and allow the roots to escape into the ground. Keep watering the pot. At the end of the growing season/early winter chop the roots going into the ground.

I leave trees to thicken in pots a fair bit. My Key learning has been the nightmare roots can be to untangle and often form quite ugly ‘pot shaped’ roots. What I do now is treat them more like giant bonsai - actively shaping and developing nebari.
Ground quicker and easier - but space constraints, and they can still be attractive plants in pots while growing.

I think if i was to grow it, i would grow it in a pot just so i can move it when i need to.
How would i go about doing this and what type of maintenance should i do for it?
Sorry i am new to all this.

You should aim for something shallow. THis will help later on when you transfer the tree to a bonsai tray. You will have less developed vertical roots and most will naturally grow out.
Before planting you need to do a very carefull cleanup of the rootbal, ensuring no roots cross or twist. As roots mature, these errors become more visible, ruining your tree on the long run. Besides that.. Keep watered, fertilized and give it lots of food (light)
