Hi, picked up a badly wire damaged but otherwise healthy azalea cheap locally last year. It developed something this year and the leaves started dying. Tried various things before resorting to defoliation of all leaves. It’s sprung back to life but leaves showing same symptoms.... Is this a disease of some kind..?

With my humble experience it looks like the tree is getting too much sun. I would shade it a little more and let it rest for a while. I am sure you will get more accurate diagnosis from someone more on expert level.

Fungal infection or trouble with your roots.

defoliation is not done on Azaleas especially a sick one. it looks like iron deficiency to me water with sequestered iron and try to use rainwater as much as possible. Also only use Kanuma soil.

I only defoliated following the usual mantra - remove diseased leaves, and they were getting close to all falling off anyway. I'll try sequestered iron and change spot as it may be getting too much sun - although problems started in a spot where I thought it may be too damp with not enough sun...
Although I have tried anti fungal spray, the problem may well lie in the roots. First as it fell and broke pot last winter and spent a few days just lying out with roots exposed, then was in a decidedly damp spot of the garden for a while... (after the trauma of me removing deeply embedded wire as well...) I will try and avoid any more trauma to it and hopefully will live till I investigate roots in late winter... I have a growing number of puzzles so expect more queries soon, but any more tips on this appreciated!
