Posted 5 years 5 months ago #52046
Hi to All,
I am very new to forum and bonsai. 3 days ago i get this bonsai as a gift. I really dont want to kill it. I made a lot of research but still i have questions. I need suggestions for what to do and i want to act quickly before its too late.

1) From research i think its Buxus kind bonsai and it should be placed outdoor?

2) My pot don't have drainage holes. What i learned it is very importent should i changed the pot?

3) I dont think soil that used is good qualty. Should i change the soil also with pot?

4) I read about pruning also but should i prune this new bonsai now?

Thanks for answers.

This plant was not grown by a bonsai grower and is not a bonsai, but it tries to mimick one.

Boxwood belongs outdoors.
Yes, it needs that drainage hole.
I can't see the soil and cannot tell if it's good or not, as it is covered with moss. You don't need that, get rid of it.
Pruning... well... would you know how to prune it?

I can send photos of soil tomorrow.
Is changing pot and soil can be dangerous?

Carefully ake away the moss, and make some pictures of the soil. Depending on the soil we can give advice

I think it may not be buxus, but rather a ligustrum sop. Take a carefull look at the leaves, and especially how they connect to the branches and compare that to pictures online.

Putting it in a pot that drains is important. If it is ligustrum you can also replace part of tjhe soil, but don't go overboard. Just tap around and see what comes off without breaking any major roots. Be gentle. Do you have experience working with plants? If not, I would get someone to help to get a feel for how far you can go

It has more likely rounded leafs. Because of that i was thinking it is boxwood. I attached the photos of course you will identfy better than me.

First i take away the moss on the top off the soil but some roots get open so i think maybe i should add some soil.

From that i saw i have 2 tree. Today i m going to change the pot. And what i saw i have 2 tree. If you guys say you should change soil also, I want to separete the trees.

Actually i dont have experience but i will get help from some local gardener.

It is a ligustrum. Probably ovatofolium.

I would not take the whole rootball apart now unless you really have to if you are not experienced. So do not try and pull these apart. Just pot them in another pot, removing only the outer layer of substrate. Come late winter/early spring, then do a proper repot.

(I know summer repots can be done, and I do it myself. However, you need to know what you are doing and be able to provide the right aftercare. I would not want you to loose your first tree over something as trivial as repotting)

I think you should only change the pot, if it is Box and I think it could be then you do not want to be disturbing the roots. You can do a proper re pot in the spring.

Tree roots need oxygen for the tree to live. They also need water vapor, which is why we water them.

With a hole in the bottom of the pot, the top of the pot fills with water, it soaks down into the soil, pushes the old air out of the hole in the bottom, and then excess water falls out, and pulls fresh air into the soil. Without the hole, no fresh air gets in, the water sits in the bottom of the pot, and the roots rot.

Some of this sounded counter intuitive to me, so I asked my friend in the biology department here and got the "everybody knows that" look. The answer was yes.
