Hi everyone o/
I've always been pretty fascinated by bonsai and finally decided to try my hand at it. Bought a lovely looking little tree from a garden centre nearby, and looking for some pointers on how to allow it to establish and thrive at home. Some of the other bonsai trees on display looked a little worse for wear so wondering if I need to repot etc.
According to the tag it is a "Ligustrum Nitida", which according to the site is relatively hardly and decent for beginners such as myself. I've placed it in my bedroom window, which is north facing (however not in direct sunlight for the latter part of the afternoon thanks to trees around the property). Will it be ok here, or will the sunlight through the window perhaps be a bit too much for it (don't want to kill the poor thing before its had a chance!)?
Have attached a couple photos, as you can see it looks like the roots are coming out of the top soil leading me to believe it may need repotting although unsure how ideal this is during the summer when it's trying to grow? Other than that I'm just going by what I've read on different sites as far as watering and using fertiliser. Bought a bottle of concentrated feed to use sparingly.
On the subject of watering, while I realise it's something of a "how long is a piece of string" question, how frequent does a tree of this size require watering? In particular should I be using a mist spray regularly as well as topping up the roots?
Any advice would be appreciated

I know you probably don't want to hear this but you bought a mallsai ( google it).
If it stays there it will die, it needs to be outside.
Try and keep it alive, water it as needed and use your time to study how and what to do.
Sorry if my answer seems blunt but a few of us answer the same questions about the same plants over and over.
Use the search button of the forum, you can learn a lot

Hi and welcome.
Your Ligustrum (privet) will possibly die if it stays indoors.
Water when the soil feels dryish, don't overdo it, don't underwater it either.
Do not repot it until you know exactly what you are doing and why, and even then don't do it in the wrong season.
It takes time, but bonsai is a wonderful pastime, if the trees survive.

My privet,as it is a tropical variety, stays inside during the winter, and goes outside when there is no more danger of frost. It will need more light than it gets witht the north facing window... if there is no frost danger where you are you could put it outside...
beyond that if the roots are very compacted, you could slip-pot the tree into a larger container... i.e. loosen the roots very carefully and slightly... and move it to a slightly larger pot. A bonsai repot involves cutting the roots and some other specific things, depending on the trees development.
