Hi - I bought a labelled bonsai from my local garden center and am keen to start learning more. I repotted, see pics, and wired the trunk and one of the larger branches. I was hoping you could help with the below.
1. What species of juniper is it and is it suitable to turn into a good bonsai in 5+ years
2. I used the soil in the plastic pot it came with and added some black lava on the bottom of the pot and too, is that suitable or should I buy proper bonsai soil and re plant?
3. Did I make a mistake wiring and pruning since its so small? Its about 6-7 inches now.
4. Should I replant in a larger pot to help it grow to size quicker?
Thanks in advance!

Nice litle tree. Hard to tell which juniper species/variety though. Maybe ask the seller?
I would keep it in a slightly smaller pot. Junipers like to be slightly potbound so the roots dry up more quickly.
As for bonsai potential.. Given enough time and technique pretty much any woody plant can be turned into a bonsai. This will be a very small one, unless you grow out the trunk more.

Thanks for the note. I would like the tree to get to 18-24 inches, is this possible? When you say grow out the trunk more, how would I go about doing that?

You could plant it on the ground for two or three years; you could use a grow box or a big colander or Anderson Flat if the ground is not a possibility.

Hello I am a fairly new bonsai owner (a little over a month now) and my tree is starting to develop yellow leaves. Unfortunately I am in New York and my window is facing the north, so the little sunlight I get is typically in the morning. I spray it with the mister after work and typically water it once the soil is dry. While I am not giving up on it, I am a little bit worried at the color of the leaves. Any help/advice is appreciated.
