New bonsai from Japanese Mapple cutting, beginner question. was created by Dagobert
Posted 5 years 6 months ago #51089I have a Japanese Mapple tree growing in my front yard. I want to use some cuttings from that to start a bonsai. After getting the right cuttings and applying rooting hormone to them, does it matter what size pot I use to plant them? Or does it have to be something really tiny for this stage? How often do you water it at this stage? Also at this stage, does the soil have to be a specific mixture or can it be regular potting soil? Should it be indoors or outdoors while waiting for it to root?
Would appreciate any feedback and advice on how not to mess up during its baby stages.

A big pot will be less helpful than small pots (that will be upsized over and over again in the future).
Same as other potted plants, keep the soil moist but not soggy.Dagobert wrote: How often do you water it at this stage?
Any soil that helps with the growing of roots. I usually use fine particles bonsai soil with a core of river sand, and it works.Dagobert wrote: Also at this stage, does the soil have to be a specific mixture or can it be regular potting soil?
I try to keep every plant outdoors, and seedlings or cuttings in dappled shade.Dagobert wrote: Should it be indoors or outdoors while waiting for it to root?

Thanks for replying. So I guess I'm a little confused about the soil here. So are we talking about something like this (obviously not necessarily this specific one):
Or are walking about for example your regular miracle grow type of soil or what you find in your garden or other indoor plants? Something like that? Just want to make sure I'm using the right soil so it does root. Also I'm using more than one cutting and more than just the mapple tree, I have some others in mind as well. How many per pot? I've got some small 8" inch or so plastic pots which I planned on drilling holes under them for drainage.

This will work fine. Usually I would mix it with some river sand and vermiculite for growing seedlings and small cuttings.

Posted 5 years 6 months ago #51134You really do not need bonsai soil.
