An Accidental Oak Tree

4 or 5 years ago a squirrel hid an acorn. It grew out of the pachysandra, 4 years I let grow, last year in the fall I trimmed it back. This spring the tree leafed out after it completed this, I trimmed again about 2 weeks ago. The tree back budded, and new branches and leaves where I wanted them to be were produced and are well formed, the ones at the crown are now 10" long, with new leaf growth ...these will need to be cut back
The soil is mostly sandy, with some organics, overall its poor quality. My goal after it sprouted was to let it grow out, it's now 5 years old, about 2 to 2.5 feet tall, and nicely shaped. the trunk is only perhaps 1" around, so two questions
1: When would be the best time to dig this tree up out of the ground. I am thinking this coming fall or if due to work constraints in March prior to the buds opening, but slightly swollen getting ready to open.
2: Should I cut back the taller branches at the crown as I don't want it to be that tall, or let it grow out and then cut back in the fall
3: Would it be best to pot it up, or to place it back into the ground for another year?
My guess is the species is either a common red oak ( Quercus rubra ), leaves turn red in fall then brown for the most part hang onto the tree during the winter months.... it might be a white oak, and looking at the acorns in the area, they do appear like those produced by a red oak.
Any suggestions?
