Yellowing leaves on Fukean Tea Tree / how to tell when to water? was created by badatusernames

I have a few yellowing leaves on my tea tree. My understanding is that this comes from overwatering. I'm trying to figure out how to tell when to water - my understanding is when the topsoil is dry, water it. Some folks say every day, maybe multiple times a day, but I've been going by soil feel and it might be a couple days before I water.

The (minor so far) yellowing leads me to believe I may be watering too aggressively. I do have the pot in a tray with river rocks that I top off regularly, and I do mist it as well. It's outside as the weather has been nice, getting shade in the morning and direct light afternoon and into evening - which might be a bit backwards, but that's just how the orientation of my porch works.

In any case, this is the fussiest type of tree I've tried so far and I'm fairly new to it, so just trying to treat it well. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

I know that sight... i tried the small amount of water every day... changed nothing... i sat her in bath when she needed watering... changed nothing.... i tried giving her more light... changed nothing...

Now she gets a bit of water when surface is completely dry, enough to be absorbed but less to make soil wet through (no water in plate underneath). Again watering routine depends on amount of light, humidity etc. there is not set times or intervals with this one.

You should remove the rockes and stop topping it up with water, she dont like that.

Thank you! So it sounds like rather than fully soaking the root ball I'm looking for more of a happy medium / ensuring the topsoil stays moist?

I'll remove the tray - thanks for the heads up!

Moist but not soaking wet. Rather a small amount more often than soak it.

If possible make sure it gets either morning or evening dun. Avoid direct sun in midday where its warmest (again depending on where you are located) it will benefit from going out if above 15 c, semi shade and dry weather. If wind make sure the windchill dont go below 10c same with daft as it wont like it.

Thanks, that's super useful. It's outside now but will likely be getting to 12C this week so I'll bring it in during the night. I'll take a closer look at the light situation, it should be out of the midday sun but I'll double check when the light starts hitting it. I'm in the Northeast US but it does get hot midday during the summer.

Really appreciate the help. If you have any thoughts on what to do if gone for a few days that'd be helpful too, I'm going to be gone for four or five days soon which I think isn't too too long but perhaps longer than I'd like given the current condition.

Well, the watering routine being adjusted as suggested by SubjectToChange, don't move it around.
Leave it outside or bring it inside.
You don't see trees running for shelter every time weather changes, right? ;)

That's a good point! Given the moisture issues, I did bring it in due to heavy rain anticipated today, but hopefully I can get it back on its feet again and will be able to leave it out as normal.
