I am new to the world of bonsai. I have three saplings that are barely growing, which I will ask about in a different thread, and one bonsai I was gifted in December.
It arrived with its leaves already dropping, and with no bulbs growing to replace them. Seeing as I live near Scotland and we don't have a lot of light and have cold, though humid, winters, I assumed it was a seasonal change. However, when we reached May and there were no bulbs and all the leaves had either fallen or browned, I grew suspicious. I have watered it consistently, kept it in a bright place, moved it into other areas, put it outside, and nothing. There is no growth. It arrived with leaves already falling and a bulge in the soil, which I put down to the roots.
Is there anything that can be done? I have attached photos. Honestly, I do not even know what type of bonsai it is, as it was a gift.
Thank you in advance to anyone with any information!

Hello, welcome.
Unfortunately, no, it is already dead.
By the pictures you have shown us, it is been dead for some time.
It happens. Go to a bonsai nursery nearby, choose a tree that is used to your climate, and enjoy it!

Does anyone know what type of bonsai it is? I really liked it, as it looks just like the trees outside. That's why I thought it would be suited to the climate.

Most likely it was an Elm, by the dry leaves in those pictures.

Also sorry for the off topic question, but how you mean “near Scotland”?
