Hi all

I need some help. There are these small white (I think bugs/insects) growing everytime my chinese elm starts growing shoots. I think they're preventing my bonsai from growing as it's looking half dead and is finding it difficult to grow more leaves.

What do i need to kill them?

I live in the UK so any links to sprays or what not that would solve the problem and general advice to how to get my tree back to full health would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Liam

These are aphids. A general insecticide should do the trick. Of just manually removing them if there are not too many. Normally other insects would eat them. Ensure to keep ants out of the tree by e.g. putting the pot on an elevation in a larger tray with water can help here, as ants defend and even farm the aphids..

Where do you keep this tree? It looks very weak, and should have easily recoverd

Thanks, I did keep it on a shelf which I think wasn't getting enough sunlight, have subsequently moved it to a brighter position 2 feet from my bedroom window. It seems to be recovering slowly with new green shoots, but ever new shoot seems to come with these aphids attached so I think I'll get the insecticide.

At the moment I'm watering it occasionally and once every 2 weeks with bonsai feeder mixed in, is there anything else I should be doing?

Thanks for the help.
