Having an extreme hot summer and a freezing winter make me think of creating a greenshouse to protect my bonsai tress.
I decided to make a greenhouse on my house roof, and add a shade cloth cover to defuse the sunlight in summer and have a good protection in winter.
So now I have some questions and I hope you will help me out:
I decided to make a greenhouse on my house roof, and add a shade cloth cover to defuse the sunlight in summer and have a good protection in winter.
So now I have some questions and I hope you will help me out:
- What percentage of shade cloth should I get, 40%, 50% or 60% as my bonsai trees needs full sun and I am afraid that this presentage might affect the health of my bonsai or at least it might increase the space between nodes and this is bad for bonsai. Or it would be fine and the tree will thrive?
- Do I need to remove the shade from my greenhouse in winter?

Answers:
1- 40% and air flow.
2- Yes, but if all trees you have go dormant it doesn't matter.

Not sure why you think you need a greenhouse. Keep in mind greenhouses heat up fast. What is your climate like?
If you grow species local to your climate you should not have to offer much protection.

I know it heat up fast and this is good for me in winter, and in summer I will open it from the side keeping the top plastic cover and the cloth shade to reduce the heat of direct sun rays.
I have bougainvilleas and some tropicals in additon to some new collected local trees which dont have very strong roots and low temprutures might kill them.
