Hello everyone,
just registered in this fantastic forum.
I have bought a elephant bush bonsai 1 month ago. The seller said me it is roughly 6 years old.
I keep it inside on the windowsill except in case of really good weather when I move it to my balcony (south-west faced).
I water it through soaking when I think it looks like it needs water.
I have recently starting fertilizing using a a bonsai solution.
I have attached some photos taken in April and May.

I am just interested in the pleasure of growing more than styling but my last goal would be to have a flat top style bonsai.
Therefore I would like to have an idea of the main steps I have to plan to arrive to this long term aim.
I have a couple of questions about:

1) I would like that my bonsai could grow taller. Currently the truck is 10cm high and the last leaf arrives to 20cm. I would like a truck that is almost twice I have now. What is the best strategy? Do I have to repot it at the end of the summer in a plastic training pot or common flower pot that is larger to accelerate the truck growth? Or just gradually increase the bonsai pot year by year? Do you reckon I can reach my target in 5 years?

2) Since I am focusing on the truck growth, would it better to do not prune any branches (such as the sacrifice branch technique) or a structural pruning is required to do not waste tree energy in the secondary branches?

3) When can I start wiring the branches to have a flatter pad?

4) I think there are some very small black bugs behind some leaves. Some leaves have brown spots (but maybe they are sun burned?) I have used a bugkiller recently but I am not sure if am going to use it again.

Thank you for any help and sorry for the long post.

(sorry for the mistake in the title, I cannot edit anymore)

This is a young c plant. The black "bugs" might be blackfly, You will not be able to wire as the branches are brittle and will not bend easily so the best way is to prune to a bud that is facing in the direction you want it to grow. You will not get a thicker trunk whilst it is in a small pot, but the trunk is not bad for the size of plant so I would not worry about it. The way to get a flatter top, although I am not sure why you want it is to prune it to the shape you want. The branches are quite one sided at the moment so I would prune back some of the longer branches and also turn to the light every two days.

It's not easy to make a flat top out of a Portucalaria.
If possible, it will take a long time.

Thank you for your replies.
I like its asymmetry I though was a characteristics of this bonsai but if the flat top is not a good style for this tree, I can amend it as you said.
Just as example I draw in the new attached photos, 3 possible cuts:
1) to create a flat pad
2) on the right branch, there is only one leaf, where do I have to cut? from the cut, Would I expect two new branches?
3) there is a lower branch, without leaves. Is it dead or is it functional for the bonsai?

Thanks
