Root pruned too hard

I've just bought an Acer and decided to repot it and do a spot of root pruning. I cut off one of the larger roots which, as it turns out, the majority of the feeder roots were growing from.
I think I've probably removed about 80% of the roots.
Is there anything I can do to improve my trees chances of survival?

Unless you are in Australia you should not be re potting at this time of year.

I'm in the UK. I know it's late but with our weird weather the buds are still extending which I've read is the time to repot (I'm very new to bonsai).

It should be fine. Keep it out of direct sun for the next 2, 3 weeks, and protect it from drying winds.
You say the buds are just extending. If you have a full head of foliage, consider thinning the foliage by removing half of the leaves.

It should be in full leaf by now, spring is the time to re pot not this late, it will put the growth back. The weather here is fine, and very warm right now over the whole country. You will need to make sure it does not dry out and keep it mainly in shade for a few weeks.
