Hello I received two bonsai as a gifts, one is a ficus too little and the other is a chinese elm which appears to be in pretty rough shape, I've read a good deal online about taking care of them but I'm just looking for some pointers in the right direction.

Both are just young plants... the right direction for the elm is outdoors, your ficus same direction if temps are warm enough in your part of the world.

So the chances for growing them indoors isn't good? I don't have a yard unfortunately although im tempted to bribe the landscapers at my apartment complex to leave them alone haha.

Unfortunately, indeed. THe development of trees indoors is usually negative.. From healthy to sickly to death is the normal routine.
Ficus can do OK, and do well if you have the option to bring them outdoors in summer. Elm can survive indoors, but are typically weak.
