Hello All
Picked up a yew on ebay the other day. Didnt cost much and the roots liked like potential for good nebari. Trunk is dull and straight otherwise so my plan was to leave it in big pot, chop low, and develop into a chunky shohin.
Scraping back soil and investigating the roots - they are monster roots! Now not sure what to tackle... I am in UK where it is late spring. What do you think - should I:
(a) carry on with plan and chop low while it is healthy and leave alone otherwise.
(b) dig out and tackle roots first before anything else
(c) leave alone until early next spring before new growth starts....
Obviously (c) is the least desirable as I dont want to waste a season, but dont want to kill it either...Any thoughts..?

There is plenty you can do this year, the roots should wait until next year, too late to do much to them. You can prune and wire branches. You have been lucky buying blind it seems. Most of that rootbase could probably be hidden with soil once repotted, You will not be wasting a season by leaving alone, but you would be if you do something and the tree sulks for a year, I have that happen with Yews,

Thanks, good advice. I will leave root alone till dormant. Think If i remove some from top where I definitely wont need it, and aim to focus growth in lower areas that I will, that will be some progress. I may post in progressions - in three years I think this will be somewhere near a starter bonsai....
Cheers!
