Ok, I'll be honest. My boyfriend bought me a bonsai for valentine's day and I know absolutely nothing about looking after them. I can't even tell you what kind of tree it is or if it's still alive. I really hope it is but I know it might not be. I'd be happy to keep it and keep taking care of it, I just have no idea how, I guess I'll learn as I go along. Could someone please help me clear everything up?? I don't want to get this wrong, it can be really confusing at first!! So far I've been watering whenever it looks like it needs it (so like, at least 1-2 times a day) and I use a bonsai feed by a company called Westland every other watering (usually every other day). I haven't done anything to prune it yet, and the leaves are quite dry and easily snap off (which is most likely my fault, I don't think they should be so dry). I'd appreciate any help identifying what kind of tree this is and how to make sure, if it's alive, how to keep it happy & healthy. Thank youu

Hi Elle,
Welcome to the forum.
To be honest.. this plant is looking very unhappy.
Two things are going wrong:
.. you fertilize way too often. Once every 6 weeks is more than enough for the plant you have there
.. you water way too often. Unless you are in full summer mode and/or a very dry area i would guess the soil does not start to dry untill after a few days.

...and three: it seems to be inside ( unless you live on the north pole plants really need to be outside)

Thanks for the advice!! I've put the bonsai in the garden now (although it'll probably be too cold during the night so I'm debating moving it back & forth) and I'll start watering/fertilising less often
