Picked this fellow up at a garden center nearby, but nobody there knew what it was. It was unmarked, but sitting in with the other bonsais in a greenhouse. This is a first bonsai for me, and I have only had it a few weeks. It doesn’t seem to be thriving and I want to give it what it needs and make sure it’s happy before attempting any pruning (planning to take it with me to a professional for lessons in that).
Any help with ID would be appreciated! I want this little friend happy and healthy!

Welcome.
It seems very unhealthy, this fellow.
Looks like a privet but I am not sure as I don't have any.
It should be outdoors, no?

It is wilting because it is too dry too wt no roots. I am not sure what it is but I agree that it should not be inside, however, if it was like that whn you bought it then you should take it back and get your money and spend it on a healthy plant

I was thinking privet as well. It’s 40° and rainy here today— should I bring him out and see if he perks up? The soil was on the dry side when I got it so they suggested keeping it the same. Hopefully he just needs a good drink?!

Well, 40C is as hot as it can take it.
Where do you live?
If it's really Celsius, then you should give it plenty of water, and rain water is best.

Sorry, should have specified— 40°F, which I believe is around 4°-5°C. I’m in New Hampshire, USA. Hopefully should stay above this temp from this point on in the season, and our temps don’t usually get up to 40°C, save for maybe a few rare midsummer days.
For now, I’ve placed my tree out where it will get some rainwater and plenty of mist, but not any direct hard rain.
