So I just started reading about bonsais and getting a bit enthused... but I can't do much because it is autumn, I live in a cool temperate area...
What can I do in autumn? I did see an oak sapling in a busy park and I so wanted to take it home with me... too bad it was busy, even though I'm sure they will just weed it out, I couldn't take it...
Is this a reasonable use of time, looking for natural and unwanted saplings... and what sort of place would you think to look for them?
Is there anything else I should do? I do have a small umbrella tree, I took some seeds from the silver birch, I put a couple of cuttings of bogainvillea in a jar with water... That's all I have so far.... what thinks you?

Go to a nursery and look for a large-juniper. Or even better; Join a club. I was at a melbourne club last year and they had some amazing trees. I am sure they can help you get set up. It will speed things up A LOT and it will help you select trees that do well in your region.
Some monster Chinese elms & Casuarina they had.
Note: Many bonsai are not grown up, but cut down from a bigger tree.

A club! Nice idea A casuarina is a nice idea. Has come up in my life a couple of random times recently. They look pretty nice as bonsais too judging by google... although I thought pines are hard to do well.

But casuarina is not a pine..
They are probably easier as bonsai than elms, from what I have seen. If casuarina would be available and survive here, I would have one.
