Hi everyone I’m very new to this but very keen to learn, I have acquired a beautiful little tree and would love to turn it into a bonsai but I am scared of ruining it! Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance Rob.

Well mate I'm no expert, but i think keys to bonsai include having it in a pot (with drainage), knowing all about the requirements of the species, soil, watering, etc etc, and most importantly waiting for years :P

Depending on the age of your tree maybe some time this year you will be in a position to carefully study the pros and cons and whathaveyou of pruning with an aim to directing future growth and trunk thickening.. But all this depends on the knowledge you acquire! This forum seems as good a place as any~

Did you ask the vendor about the species?
Did you check the soil to see if it is draining?
I see leaves wilting a little, how is it being watered?

Thank you for your speedy reply, I believe I have it in the correct soil with good drainage, I was curious to know if my tree is ok as is, or if it should be cut down shorter? It’s currently at about 80cm

I have recently dug this out of the ground and put in its current pot!

I would wait at least a year so it can recover from being transplanted, and then I would consider shortening it a little.
