Un-well Serissa (beginner)

I have had this Serissa for 3 months. Initially, I watered it once or twice per week, but it was really dry between waterings, so now I'm up to three times per week. I water it by submerging the pot in water so that it 'waters' through the drainage holes, and waits until the soil is wet all the way through. I'm not doing anything active besides that. It's placed in an eastbound window. As evident, it's not doing well. A lot of leaves are yellowing/browning and it's dropping foilage. Any suggestions as to what I should try to do?

Serissa is a very difficult species... the react to changes even faster than ficus, and often with the death of a branch. Mine finally bit the dust after about 1 year with me... I have no plans to get another one. I wouldn't water it, by dunking, but with a watering can. Have you measured the humidity? if it is very dry where the plant is, it could be that... it could also be the roots. It could also be that it is not getting enough light where it is. Have you used fertilizer? it looks like the roots might be compacted... but difficult to tell...

The problem started with incorrect watering at the start, this species is indeed very difficult in spite of what you might be told or read. Dunking is ok but it must get almost dry in between, and do not leave it in the water for more than a few minutes. It is reacting to poor watering being starved of water which is causing the leaves to drop. Do not add any fertiliser until and unless it recovers. Do not re pot or touch the roots again until and unless it recovers, all you can do is wait and see.

Dunking like that is what you do when the soil has dried out so much that water runs off the top and down the sides of the root ball because it is so dry it has shrunk away from the side of the pot. It works in that case but you should never let the tree get that dry. Water from the top, slowly, until water pours out of the holes in the bottom of the pot. That pushes old air out of the root ball, and then sucks new air in from above.
