Hello,
I am new to the hobby and I am going to attempt to start with a coastal redwood but I have a couple questions. As for me I am living in Anchorage Alaska, I have a green house and plenty of area at my house to maintain the proper environment. I decided to order a 2 year old seedling from a nursery that I know of. My question is if I should start it out in a deeper pot to allow it to grow freely for a couple of years? How do I go about turning this seedling into a healthy pre-bonsai plant? Any knowledge or experience shared would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I do not know coastal redwood

Growing a tree out for bonsai requires letting the tree just grow without trimming, and giving the roots space & water & fertilizer. In order to create taper, there are numerous ways, mainly related to either growing lots of low branches, or frequent cut-backs of the leavding trunk.

Seedlings are very sensitive to the environment. Even in the environment they evolved in not many live, and you can tell that because a redwood will spawn thousands of seeds a year. If 1 percent lived every year, that would be dozens of new trees this year from one tree, then some multiple of 144 next year, etc, and there aren't that many trees. If you can set up the greenhouse to be like the Pacific coast in California you might get good success, but you have to pay attention to temperature, wind, humidity, daylight hours of sun, etc. Two years is enough that it might survive OK, but you have to create an acceptable environment for the tree.

Good luck.

Thank you both for your advice,
When it comes to developing a seedling into pre-bonsai material is it best to let the plant grow in a bonsai pot or should i continue to let it grow in a deep pot to enable a vigorous growth season. Also if I do continue to allow it to grow in a pot should I place a tile under the root ball to keep the root ball flat? I have been doing a lot of research into the climate and development of redwoods. I have an area set up in my green house where it should be good. Can too much light be a bad thing? We currently average 14.5 hours a day.
